From east to west and north to south coffee is a vital part of every culture. In some cultures, coffee has been around for over 300 years. Northern Europeans have been drinking fairly large quantities of coffee. In the Middle East, coffee is a part of family traditions and mostly linked to national identity. Every culture and country have their own way of drinking coffee. Today we are taking you to Vietnam.

Vietnam is the second largest coffee producing country in the world. In Vietnam coffee is a way of life, a distinct and essential part of local culture. Vietnamese coffee is a combination of fresh slow brewed coffee, condensed milk, hot water and ice, especially due to the hot weather condition in many months of the year.

Vietnamese coffee filter

This flavoursome and intense coffee is obtained through a small stainless steel brewer called a Phin, which typically produces 300 ml of coffee. No paper filter, no heavy machine setups or complex cleaning is needed. It is as simple as it sounds. A unique drip is achieved when you brew coffee in a Phin filter gadget. It is less concentrated than espresso and slightly more intense than your usual filter coffee. These Phins come in different sizes but they fit on top of a cup or mug.

Phin coffee brewing filter has four parts

  • Stainless steel saucer – bottom part, it has tiny holes that allow coffee to drip into the cup
  • The brewing chamber into which you put the ground coffee
  • Then comes the filter Press that is of two types screw Press or gravity Press. It goes into the chamber above the coffee over which water is poured.
  • Stainless steel lid, cap or hat that goes on top of the chamber. It keeps the heating trapped inside the chamber.
