Easy and quick kruidnoten recipe for Sinterklaas

Coffee treats 15-11-2016

Kruidnoten is the sign that Sinterklaas is just around the corner. In the 17th century spices were pretty expensive and that’s why their use was reserved for holidays and celebrations. Now you see- kruidnoten are Sinterklaas’s special spiced treats! Strong smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and many other spices in kruidnoten is what makes them special and will certainly make you hungry while you’re baking them! Ask anyone in the Netherlands and they would confirm- Sinterklaas would be incomplete without these lovely spiced little cookies.

So here at Jones Brothere Coffee, we’re starting the Sinterklaas season with making kruidnoten. We’re sharing our simple recipe for you to make your holiday a bit more special.

  • 200g of self-raising flour
  • 100g of brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1tsp of each ground aniseed, white pepper, and salt
  • 1tsp of cinnamon powder
  • ½ tsp of each ground ginger, nutmeg, and cloves
  • 2tbsp of butter
  • 2tbsp of water

How do you make it?

It’s a simple process but be careful to pay extra attention to little details. Put everything together and knead a stiff dough. Leave the kneaded dough to rest for a couple of hours in the fridge. The secret here is to let the dough rest to let the flavors of all the spices blend together. Heat up the oven to 150°C. Roll the dough into small balls and place them on a silicon mat on a baking tray. Press each ball slightly down. Bake them for 15 minutes until they are nicely brown. Let them cool and….. voila!

We hope you enjoy them! We love having them with a cup of Italian Lover. And you? Let us know! If you are looking for gift ideas coffee lover friends and family, keep an eye on our blog posts we might have a few suggestions for you coming up.
