How to recycle coffee grounds for your gardening

Coffee culture 30-08-2016

Every morning a nice cup of delicious coffee wakes you up and gets you ready for the day but while cleaning your coffee machine you might suddenly realize the alarming amount of ground coffee remaining. Did you know that you could reuse them? Here are some ideas for you to consider the magic power of coffee grounds in your garden.

1.Healthy plants- all thanks to coffee!

You might or might not know that coffee grounds have a rich amount of nitrogen, which is an important part of amino acids, and amino acids are essential to protein. This means that nitrogen helps plants to grow rapidly. Spread a fine layer of coffee grounds around the plant then water it. To make sure that nitrogen goes into the soil. Your plants should grow nice and healthy. Interesting right?

2.Grow your own…mushrooms in coffee grounds

Yes, you can grow mushrooms in used coffee grounds!

Let us share the adventure of one of the fans of our coffee, Wim van Wierst, who loves drinking Awakening and Italian lover but is also a skilled and successful gardener. He smartly used his Awakening coffee grounds to grow the mushroom.

How?

He used the special bucket from RotterZwam Mushrooms, filled it up with used coffee grounds and planted some oyster mushroom seeds in it. He left the bucket in the cold shed and voila, he could enjoy the results after just a few days. And as you can see in the pictures, they are beautiful (and yum!)

Thanks Wim!

3.DIY coffee fertilizer for plants

Give your used coffee grounds to your plants as fertilizer. Spread the used coffee grounds on a piece of paper (like a newspaper) let them dry in the natural air then store them in a sealed bag. Use the dried coffee grounds as nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Just don’t forget to use them within three weeks.

Recycled coffee grounds can turn your garden into a green oasis. Try them out and let us know how it went! We’d love to see the pictures of your healthy plants. Which coffee beans did you use? We’ll be giving our plants some of the Big Shot.

Love what we brew!
