So, let’s just put this out there – we love specialty coffee from Ethiopia! We can’t hide it. It’s hard not to. Ethiopia has a more diverse range of coffee flavour possibilities and individual regions than any of the other coffee growing nations. The arabica coffee tree is native to Ethiopia and because of the perfect growing conditions for this coffee tree, the average quality of Ethiopian coffees is the best in the world.
This is our second-year harvest for our Horny Goat Ethiopian specialty coffee and we are super-stoked to have found this coffee beans from the Ye Gennet washing station in Guji, in the south of Ethiopia.

We tasted underlying hints of juicy mandarin oranges and a lush strawberry sweetness, with the same bright acidity as last year, but with the added characteristics of a more clean cup. A wonderful tea-like consistency as a filter coffee with all those fruit notes on display and yet a gorgeous roundness and depth as an espresso coffee. All coffees from southern Ethiopia display an earthiness in the cup and this is of course no exception. There is still that dense medium bodied texture and a light chocolate aftertaste to balance out a super drinking experience.
Ye Gennet is the brainchild of Tsegaye Hagos. From the Tigray region, like many Ethiopians, he is born into the coffee way of life. He was the originator of another famous and successful washing station in Guji, Sasaba. Sasaba was a phenomenon in Guji and its success has paved the way for Ye Gennet.
Tsegaye is known for being one of the most consistent people in producing high-quality Guji coffees and his idea to open Ye Gennet washing station was not from per-sonal ambition, but rather in the migration of the Gedeo people, from Gedeo to Guji.
The Gedeo people have a land shortage. A great number of smallholders left their homes and settled in Guji, including the Kercha and Hambela Wamena areas. Both areas offer far more space than the overcrowded Gedeo zone. These migrants have coffee growing experience and Tsegaye attracts the best among them to deliver the coffee cherries at Ye Gennet. The Gedeos are the workforce behind the success of Ye Gennet washing station.
These coffee farmers are consistent in picking fully ripe coffee cherries and use a systematic farming system to produce more uniform coffee beans. The conditions in the surrounding area are also excellent. Fertile red-brown soil that is rich in iron. Young and vital arabica coffee trees and altitudes that surpass 2000 m.a.s.l.
Tsegaye gives the smallholders financial incentives to deliver good coffee cherries. On top of that, he initiates social projects to improve conditions in the area. For instance, the construction of a school building for the children of the coffee community.
